Shooting Disciplines

 

The following diagrams explain the various categories / types of shooting sports followed in India - Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun. Please note that the pictures are for reference only, there are several different manufacturers of competition guns.

PISTOL SHOOTING

10m Air Pistol

An event for both Men & Women; Air pistol to fire .177 Cal. (4.5mm) lead pellets. An indoor event, the target is placed at a distance of 10 meters. NR matches require 40 shots; ISSF matches require 60 shots (40 for women).

50m Free Pistol

This is a firearm event for Men, using .22 cal. Cartridges to shoot a target at a distance of 50 meters. NR matches require 30 shots; ISSF matches require 60 shots.

25m Centre-Fire Pistol

This is a firearm event for Men, using .32 S&W LWC Cal. cartridges to shoot a target at a distance of 25 meters. It is divided in two stage first is Precision stage in which a series of 5 shots need to be shot in 5 minutes and the second stage is Rapid Fire Stage in which a series of 5 shots are fired on exposure of target within 3 seconds followed by a break of 7 seconds. NR matches require 30 shots (15 in Precision +15 in Rapid Fire); ISSF matches require 60 shots (30 in Precision +30 in Rapid Fire).

25m Rapid Fire Pistol

This is a firearm event for Men, using .22 cal. bullets to shoot a series of 5 shots on a set of five different targets at a distance of 25 meters divided in time frame of 8 seconds, 6 seconds and 4 seconds. ISSF matches require 60 shots (4 series of 5 shots in 8 seconds + 4 series of 5 shots in 6 seconds + 4 series of 5 shots in 4 seconds).

25m Standard Pistol

This is a firearm event for Men, using .22 cal. bullets to shoot a series of 5 shots in 150 seconds then 20 seconds and then in 10 seconds on a target at a distance of 25 meters. NR matches require 30 shots (2 series of 5 shots in 150 Seconds + 2 Series of 5 shots in 20 seconds + 2 series of 5 shots in 10 seconds)  ; ISSF matches require 60 shots (4 series of 5 shots in 150 Seconds + 4 Series of 5 shots in 20 seconds + 4 series of 5 shots in 10 seconds) .

25m Sports Pistol

This is a firearm event for Women and Junior Men. This is a firearm event for Men, using .22 Cal. cartridges to shoot a target at a distance of 25 meters. It is divided in two stage first is Precision stage in which a series of 5 shots need to be shot in 5 minutes and the second stage is Rapid Fire Stage in which a series of 5 shots are fired on exposure of target within 3 seconds followed by a break of 7 seconds. NR matches require 30 shots (15 in Precision +15 in Rapid Fire); ISSF matches require 60 shots (30 in Precision +30 in Rapid Fire).


 

RIFLE SHOOTING

10m Air Rifle

An event for both Men & Women; Air rifle to fire .177 cal.  (flat headed) lead pellets. An indoor event, the target is placed at a distance of 10 meters. NR matches for Men require 40 shots; ISSF matches require 60 shots (40 for women).

50m Rifle Prone
(Small bore)

This is a firearm event for Men & Women, using .22 cal. cartridges to shoot a target at a distance of 50 meters in Prone Position. NR matches require 60 shots (Men), 40 shots (Women); ISSF matches require 60 shots.

50m Rifle 3-Position
(Small bore)

This is a firearm event for Men & Women, using .22 cal. bullets to shoot a target at a distance of 50 meters. NR matches require 20 shots standing, 20 shots kneeling and 20 shots in prone position (Total 600); For ISSF matches Men – 40 shots standing, 40 shots kneeling and 40 shots in prone position (Total 1200).

300m Rifle Prone
(Big Bore)

Same competition as 50m Small Bore Rifle but using large caliber bullets (6mm, .308, .30-06 etc.).

300m Rifle 3-Position
(Big bore)


Same competition as 50m Small Bore 3-Position Rifle but using large caliber bullets (6mm, .308, .30-06 etc.).

 

 

SHOTGUN SHOOTING

Clay Pigeon Trap Shooting

 

An outdoor event for both Men & Women using shotgun cartridges to break orange-coloured clay discs (called clay birds), launched away from the shooter from an underground position, approx. 15m ahead of the firing line. One clay ‘bird’ is released at a time and the Shooter is required to fire from 5 different stations.

Clay Pigeon Double Trap Shooting

 

Same event as Trap Shooting, except that 2 clay ‘birds’ are released with a small time-gap.

Clay Pigeon Skeet Shooting

 

A similar outdoor event which has two ‘houses’ - one high and one low, towards the right and left of the shooter.  There are 8-stations from which the Shooter has to fire at the clay ‘birds’ that cross in an arc.
